From the user perspective there are four steps to making a connection to the Sailor Web site. Equipment requirements: + Computer + Modem + Telephone line + Communications software + Sailor Network Dial Access Numbers DIALING IN TO SAILOR 1. DIAL IN: The first step in connecting to the Internet via Sailor Dial Up is to establish a telephone link between your modem and a Sailor modem. For this to work correctly, you need to set your communications software to the correct settings and a Sailor Network Dial Access Number. When such a connection is established, your personal computer takes on the characteristics of a vt100 terminal. This means the commands sent by pressing keys on your keyboard will be understood by the Sailor Web server and computers on the Internet, and the screens of information transmitted from the Internet to your personal computer will be displayed correctly on your monitor. 2. MENU SELECTION: When your vt100 dial up connection is established a menu of choices will be displayed on your monitor screen. Sailor will be one of those choices on that menu. Where available, the online Public Access Catalog for the local Public Library will be another choice. Just type the number of your selection and press your "Enter" key. ***Sailor (R): Maryland's Online Public Information Network *** 1. Sailor - Login:guest 2. Local library online catalog 3. Other online resource Enter Selection (1-3,q) 3. LOGIN: When you choose Sailor from the menu, a telnet connection to the Sailor Web Site (sailor.lib.md.us) is established for you and a prompt to login as guest is displayed. The word guest must be entered as lower case letters. UNIX(r) System V Release 4.0 (sailor) Login as "guest" login: After you login as guest press your "Enter" key. Next, you will be prompted to confirm your terminal emulation as vt100. Press "Enter" again. At this point one or more brief messages may be displayed, followed by a prompt to 'Hit Enter to continue.' 4. LYNX: Pressing "Enter" at the 'Hit Enter to continue.' prompt is the last step in opening a telnet session to the Sailor computer using the guest account. At this point the system automatically starts a program called Lynx for you. Lynx is the text-based World Wide Web browser developed at the University of Kansas. Sailor is the default home page. As a guest user on sailor.lib.md.us, the only software application available to you is Lynx. Therefore you will not ever see a command line prompt when you login, and when you quit Lynx, your guest login telnet to sailor.lib.md.us will be disconnected. _________________________________________________________________ DIRECT CONNECTION By direct connection to resources on the Sailor Network and the Internet, we mean a TCP/IP connection from the enduser's computer. The most common ways to establish a TCP/IP connection between a personal computer and the Internet are: * LAN connection from your library, school, college or office * PPP connection via an Internet Service Provider * Residential ISDN connection via an Internet Service Provider There are two modes of access to the Sailor Web site and the Internet from a direct TCP/IP network connection. * Character-based interface mode using a local Telnet application or using a local Lynx browser * Graphical User Interface mode using a graphic web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. _________________________________________________________________ top of page . home port . feedback . search http://sailor.lib.md.us/help/connect.html updated 27 June 1997
