Again this week good numbers of shorebirds are being reported. No less than 22 species of shorebirds were seen in the hotline coverage area.
Of the standout shorebirds being found were; one adult BAIRD?S SANDPIPER first spotted on 7/29 in the first ?Plover pond? north of Bunker pond at the Cape May Point State Park. Apparently this particular bird left the area only to be replaced by a second adult BAIRD?S SANDPIPER in the second ?Plover pond? This bird continued through today 8/4.
An unusual find on 8/2 was a juv. UPLAND SANDPIPER at the edge of the spartina marsh feeding in the wrack at Two Mile Landing.
On 8/3, eight AMERICAN AVOCETS were seen flying around Bunker pond at the Cape May Point State Park. These birds continued south over the Delaware Bay.
Songbird migration has begun in earnest and while difficult to find at times, there are early migrants around.
Today, 8/4 a CERULEAN WARBLER was seen along with at least five species of migrant warblers at Higbee?s Beach.
On 7/31 one BROWN PELICAN was spotted loafing on Champagne Island in Hereford Inlet.
The SANDHILL CRANE continues at the Beaver Swamp WMA at Beaver Dam Road.
Lastly, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen from 7/30-7/31 on the beach between the Meadows and the Cape May Point State Park.
CMBO?s bookstore hours are as follows: Northwood Center on East Lake Drive in Cape May Point is open Thursday through Tuesday, 9-4:30. The Northwood Center will be closed on Wednesdays through the months of July and August and will resume a seven day a week schedule in September. The Northwood Center will be closed from 8/9-8/13. The Center for Research and Education on Route 47 in Goshen is open 7 days a week, 9-4:30.
